Palm Springs Aerial Tram – Facts and Figures

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the world’s largest rotating tramcar that takes you on an exhilarating ride across the beautiful cliffs of the Chino Canyon. This exciting 2.5 mile ride starts at Valley Station which has an elevation of 2,600 ft. and finishes at the Mountain Station which has an elevation  over 8,500 ft. This 10 minute ride provides 360 degree breathtaking views. The popular Summer Ride & Dine, is a great way to beat the desert heat.  Enjoy dinner & music at The Peaks Restaurant with summer specials between July 1 – August 31. 

Established in 1963 and coined as the Eighth Wonder of the World when it opened. They installed rotating tramcars in 2000 that take passengers on a 2.5 mile journey from the bottom of the Coachella Valley to the top of the San Jacinto Peak.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is about a two hour drive from LA, San Diego and Orange County by car. It was coined as the Eighth Wonder of the World in 1961 and is an engineering miracle. The towers are so tall that the tramway was constructed using helicopter.  Since its beginning, The Royal Springs Aerial Tramway has safely transported more than 12,000,000 passengers.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is home to the Tramway Animal Park with occupies 10 acres of land in the San Jacinto Winter Park. This area is home to wildlife such as deer, dolphins, reindeer,, chimpanzees and more. Take advantage of the Southern California wildlife by visiting one of the regular shows hosted at the Tramway Animal Park.

  • Cars depart at least every half hour from: Last car up is 8:00pm. Last car down is at 9:45pm
    • 10:00am – Monday-Friday
    • 8:00am – Weekends and Holiday periods

  • The Tramway is subject to delays and periodic shutdowns due to unforeseen circumstances and is not responsible for ticket refunds or the inability to redeem a voucher
  • Tramway cars hold 80 people each and there are no seats. Passengers remain standing throughout the journey up the mountain
  • Distance is approximately 12,800 feet, with a vertical ascent of 5,873 feet – 15 minutes travel time one way
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Strollers are permitted
