ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
In early 2021, the city of Palm Desert prepared for the latest addition to its Art in Public Places Program. They initiated an open call, inviting artists to submit applications for their design concepts for a 360-degree art sculpture destined to become the focal point of the newly envisioned San Pablo corridor. The selected sculpture would be showcased in the center of the San Pablo and San Gorgonio Roundabout.
Later in 2021, the Cultural Arts Committee selected two finalists and presented the design concepts to the community for their vote for the next Art in Public Places Sculpture.
The two finalists were:
Donald Gialanella – SunBurst
WinKyle Absolom – Dueling Palms
The Winner, Donald Gialanella’s – Sunburst
Once the selection was made, it was time to get to work.
The city started making plans for the installation and the artist started working on turning his design concept into reality. The artist explains, this 25′ tall abstract stainless steel sculpture can be interpreted to represent multiple concepts, the sunrise/sunset, a flower that opens and closes as the viewer circulates around it, or an abstract palm tree that celebrates Palm Desert’s natural beauty. As a Sunburst, it pays homage to the Sun, a perfect symbol for what Palm Desert is all about.
Last week construction fences went up on the vacant lot at the Roundabout, prepared as the staging area for the installation. Concrete footings were poured and the sculpture arrived late Friday afternoon at the staging area. Today, crews are busy setting the stage for the new sculpture to be installed Monday, November 13th beginning at 7:00 a.m.
INSTALLATION BEGINS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2023 STARTING AT 7:00 A.M.
