At Home in 2015 and Beyond……

According to the latest report from the National Association of Home Builders, (NAHB), new homes will be smaller in 2015. Home Builders who were surveyed, expect new single family homes to average 2,150 square feet, down from 2,521 during the peak in 2007.

Along with a smaller foot print, you can expect to see the Living Room dissapear – 52% of home builders said they expect the Living Room to merge with other spaces and 30% believe it vanish completely – paving the way for the Great Room concept which combines the Family Room & Living Room and flows into the Kitchen.

Expect to See More:

  • Spacious Laundry Rooms
  • Master Suite with Walk-in Closets
  • Porches
  • Eat in Kitchens
  • Two Car Garages
  • Ceiling Fans
  • Compact Flourescent & LED Lighting
  • Water Efficient Appliances & Plumbing
  • Energy Efficient Windows & Doors
  • Walk In Showers
  • Ground Floor Master Bedrooms

Expect to See Less:

  • Formal Dininig Rooms
  • Four Bedrooms or More
  • Media or Hobby Rooms
  • Skylights
  • Mudrooms

Although affordability is driving the much of the decision, you can attribute the new trends to going Green and the Boomer Population. Smaller spaces are more energy efficient for heating & cooling and a larger share of new homes are expected to be purchased by people 55 or older.

Home Builders say smaller is Good News for them as well as the home buyer; builders can be more creative with their design with better flow and offer more amenities – Builders believe they can deliver a better home for the new home buyer.
