2020 Riverside County Date Fair & National Date Festival dives into the date, the hallmark of the Coachella Valley’s farming culture. Akin to what Mid-Century Modern architecture means to the Greater Palm Springs Area’s real estate realm, the date is synonymous with the Coachella Valley. These delicious fruits are a product of the date palm, which comprises a big portion of the Southern California desert’s agricultural industry.
Get a taste of the delectable date, and the Coachella Valley’s rich culture, at the 2020 Riverside County Date Fair & National Date Festival, taking place February 14-23 at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio. This event offers fun for the whole family, including nightly entertainment from renowned music artists to monster trucks, demolition derby, and a recurring Arabian Nights musical. All the live entertainment is paired with carnival rides, a livestock fair, rodeo, food, and craft vendors.
The Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival started as a celebration for the end of the annual date harvest in the Coachella Valley. The event today remains true to those agricultural roots as well as an Arabian Nights theme developed decades ago and is still represented by nightly pageants. So in addition to fair favorites like animal exhibits and monster truck rallies, you’ll also be able to enjoy Camel and Ostrich Races and cooking demonstrations featuring dates. Musical entertainment and carnival rides add to the appeal of this diverse county fair.
Dates were an unknown commodity in the valley until 1903 when date palms were transplanted here from Algeria. By the early 1920’s, enough acreage was planted to make dates a major crop for the area. In fact, the date industry represented Riverside County at the 1915 World’s Fair in San Francisco. Date groves in the Coachella Valley were such a novelty that they became quite a tourist attraction.
With the popularity of the date gardens, the idea was planted for a date festival to be held in Indio City Park in 1921. The heavily publicized International Festival of Dates was promoted with an Arabian theme, a reference to the ancestral homeland of the date. A second festival was held the following year, but the interest for an annual fair waned. Instead, date agriculturalists promoted the crop at events such as the Southern California Fair in Riverside, the California State Fair and the Golden Gate International Exposition.
Today, the Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival remains an integral part of the greater Coachella Valley community and a major tourist attraction. It continues the legacy of decades-old desert traditions while celebrating the desert’s history and community, and of course, providing enjoyment fo the whole family.

Don’t miss the 55th Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade when it steps off on El Paseo on the last Sunday in October. Pint-size floats, all built to interpret this year’s theme of “Let the Good Times Roll.” Since the early 1960s, this festive parade has been a favorite around town. And while it once had a “Christmas in July” theme, the Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade is now an annual – and highly anticipated late October event.
With a full list of activities planned, including the Palm Desert Rotary Pancake Breakfast, a Golf Cart Show, a Kids’ Play Zone and more, families can experience an entire day of festive fun.
The parade itself starts on Sunday, October 27, 2018 at 12:00 p.m., and the parade route will follow El Paseo, westbound, from San Luis Rey to Ocotillo. Finding a place to park won’t be a problem since there are several parking lots and a parking structure in the area.
Palm Desert has upped its sponsorship of the annual Golf Cart Parade, allocating $40,000 to the chamber of commerce to hire a consultant and breathe new life into the city’s signature event. This year’s event marks the 55th Golf Cart Parade, which generally draws thousands to El Paseo for a Sunday of entertainment and activities. It also is an annual fundraiser for the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event.
“The Golf Cart Parade is part of the city’s identity” Jonathan said at Thursday’s meeting. “It’s all about having good fun that has a sense of humor, but also brings the community together. We urged the chamber to bring it up to the next level and I feel we have a responsibility to support that effort financially.”
It might look simple, but rolling a fleet of golf carts down El Paseo isn’t easy. “It’s kind of like the duck on the water,” Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade co-chairman Mike Hardin explains, “where you paddle underneath and it looks real smooth on top.” He and about 15 fellow committee members spend up to 10 months planning and executing the ever-growing event, which includes children’s activities, food trucks, and a classic car show. However, everyone is there for the main affair: delightfully decorated golf-cart floats.
The parade has been a Palm Desert institution for 55 years, beginning when residents at the Shadow Mountain Club decided to doll up their golf carts.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians plans to build a 10,000-seat arena in the heart of Palm Springs for ice hockey and live entertainment.
The new facility will be north of the tribe’s downtown casino and two blocks from the desert city’s main drag. The arena project will be developed on the tribal property north of the Agua Caliente Casino Palm Springs, generally between Amado Road on the south, Alejo Road on the north, Calle Encilia on the west, and Calle El Segundo on the east.
Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said in a phone interview that the partnership was more than a year in the works and came about because Oak View Group was looking for a home for the expansion team. The Coachella Valley’s large number of winter residents from Canada made it a natural fit.
Tim Leiweke, CEO and co-founder of Oak View Group, said the projected cost of the arena, training center and hockey team is $250 million. Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe said the arena will be privately funded, exclusively by the tribe and Oak View Group.
Live Nation Entertainment also has signed on as a strategic partner with the project and will “supply the new arena with its large stable of top touring artists and premium live events,” according to a news release.
Grubbe said he doesn’t have details on what the arena would look like yet, and not to expect renderings any time soon. He did say that the arena would be state of the art and would fit in with the overall look of downtown Palm Springs.
Groundbreaking and construction is scheduled to begin in February 2020, according to the tribe. The arena is expected to open by fall 2021 in time for the hockey season.

This spectacular World War II epic finds 2,000 trapped soldiers on a Greek island by Nazi invaders. Their only hope of escape is by boat. A small party led by Mallory (Gregory Peck) must make it by the radar station and immense firepower at Navarone. Miller (David Niven) is the demolition expert needed to sabotage the fortress. The men must scale the massive cliffs in order to blow up the enemy stronghold. Anthony Quinn plays the Greek resistance officer who battles with Mallory.
